For the past three weeks I have been working on on a launch project for a home design magazine. On Thursday, my group presented our plan to a panel of judges including Brandon Holley, editor-in-chief of Lucky Magazine, Matt Sullivan, web director at esquire.com, and Christine Guilfoyle, publisher of Every Day with Rachel Ray.
Our magazine, Alcove, targeted 25 to 35 year olds who have their first or second job. They have enough disposable income to make splurge purchases but still want do-it-yourself projects and cheap thrift store finds. It’s all about filling your first home with fun, fresh style.
As the art director, I was responsible for the color palette, font choices, cover design and page designs. I also worked with the digital director to help design the website and tablet version of the magazine.
We got a positive response from the judges even though they were doubtful we could make a home design magazine successful in this market (unfortunately we did not get to pick our category). I was most excited when Christine Guilfoyle told us the magazine was, “Beautiful, just beautiful.”
Below are some samples from the issue.
* Unfortunately we did not have a budget to do photo shoots for this project so images were stolen online for educational purposes. I understand that this is a copy write violation and would never do this in a professional situation. This is also why some of the photos are blurry.
What do you think? Should we start looking for investors?
